The engine won’t turn over
A click, or nothing at all when you turn the key: often the battery or the starter.
Flat battery, stalling engine, a warning light, smoke under the bonnet: our driver looks for the cause on the spot, jump-starts or replaces the battery, and tows the car if the engine needs a garage.

An engine that won’t turn over, or turns slowly, is very often the battery. Cold weather, short city trips and a battery over four or five years old are enough to drain it. We jump-start it with a booster; if it no longer holds a charge, we replace it on the spot.
If it’s not the battery, there are other suspects: the alternator, the starter motor, the ignition, the injection or overheating. Some can be sorted on the spot, others need a garage.
Red engine light, smoke or a knocking noise: stop as soon as you can and switch the engine off. Driving on for a few more kilometres can turn a small repair into a very big bill.
